How to cook Bengali Katla Vapa

  • Katla fish - 4 piece
  • Mustard seed - 1 tbsp
  • Poppyseed - 1.5 tbsp
  • Turmeric powder - 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Sugar - 1/4 tsp
  • Mustard oil - 4 tbsp
  • Curd - 3 tbsp
  • Slit green chilli - 3 no.
  • Lemon juice - 1 tsp

Fish Marination :
1. Katla Fish - 4 pieces
2. Salt -1/2 tsp
3. Lemon juice - 1 tsp
4. Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
Curry Preparation :
1. mustard seed paste - 1 tbsp
2. Poppy seed paste - 1.5 tbsp
3. Curd - 3 tbsp
4. Sugar - 1/4 tsp
5. Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
6. Salt to taste
7. Mustard oil - 4 tbsp
8. Slit green chilli - 3 no.


1. Clean Katla fish under running water.
2. After that, marinate the fish with salt, turmeric powder and some lemon juice. Keep aside for 30 min.
3. Take a small bowl and soak 1.5 tbsp of poppy seeds, 1 tbsp of mustard seeds and 3 no. green chillies in 1/4 th cup of warm water for 10-15 mins. Once seeds are softened grind it into a coarse paste.
4. Now take 3 tbsp of curd, 2 tbsp of ground paste, 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder, some salt to taste, 1/4 th tsp of sugar and 2 tbsp of mustard oil in the tiffin box mix it well.
5. Add 1/4 th cup of water in the mixture and mix it again. Now add marinated fish in the mixture and coat it well with the paste.

7. Add 3 slit green chillies and 2 tbsp of mustard oil. Close the lid tightly.
8. Take a large wide-open pan; place a stand in the middle add some water and bring it a boil.
9. After that, set the Katla filled tiffin box on the stand carefully so that the tiffin box doesn’t touch the bottom of the pan. Cover the pan with a tightly fitted lid and allow to cook on a low flame for 25 mins.
10. Once done switch off the flame and let it cool down completely.
11. Now open the lid and serve with hot steamed rice.
